Executive Summary:
Report No. 118 is among a long series of NCRP reports focused on operational radiation safety. This Report resulted from recognition of the fact that the extraction and processing of virtually any mineral, not just those perceived as radioactive materials, might result in some level of radiation exposure warranting consideration of the need for radiation protection practices. The Report is aimed at managers and technical staff members who have become aware of the potential radiation problems and perceive the importance of evaluating facility design and operations from the point of view of potential radiation exposures. The Report describes the vital parts of an effective radiation safety program for mineral extraction facilities. Major sections of the Report include those on design of radiation protection programs; sources of potential radiation exposures; exposure management program; monitoring of occupational exposure; effluent monitoring and environmental surveillance; guidelines, standards and regulations; radiation emergency response planning; and radiation protection in specific applications.
