Executive Summary:
Report No. 87 is concerned chiefly with the conceptual framework and methodology required for proper assessment of the occurrences, magnitudes and retention of internal depositions of radionuclides in humans. General information on bioassay procedures is given, as is guidance on critical elements of a bioassay program such as when bioassay is needed, who should participate, how frequently sampling should occur, how the results might be interpreted, and the limitations of bioassay data for health protection purposes. Many of the problems involved in bioassay efforts, such as errors in the measurements made, uncertainties in the models used to interpret the results, and variability among subjects in radionuclide metabolism and dosimetry are treated in the Report.
